It’s not an exaggeration to say that the Bierzo region in northwestern Spain is in the middle of nowhere. Its main town and capital, Ponferrada is three hours by car from the airport in Vigo which is the only one to actually have useful flights in the area. By train, it’s 4.5 hours from Madrid 9.5 from Barcelona. By car it’s slightly faster but not so much to really take note of.
