In what marks another loss for the embattled Spanish Denomination of Origin Cava, the sparkling producer, Muscàndia has announced that as of December 2024, they have parted ways with Cava.
In speaking with director, Eduard Viader, he said, “We have decided that we want to change direction and fully embrace a sustainable future and given this, our path as a winery has taken us elsewhere.”
For anyone keeping score, this comes hot on the heels of the new winery, Cisteller joining Corpinnat. When asked for comment if they were going to do the say, Eduard stated, “For the moment we’re moving forward without being under any other organization. These are changes we’ve taken time to implement and we want to go about in a manner that works best for us and our winery.”
To that end, in addition to leaving Cava, they are also changing their entire brand identity, renaming the winery to Viader, the name of the family. Eduard said that for some time the family has had a company that provided enological services with the family name and they didn’t want to confuse people. He also said that they’ve long been hesitant to change the name to their family as it marked a bit step, albeit it’s one they’re clearly ready to take now in this new step for the winery.
As was shown in the large Catalan sparkling wine report of last year, while not a large sparkling producer with 60,000 bottles in annually, Viader is producing some very fine wines with a majority base of Xarel·lo variety as well as showing fine work with Pinot Noir. In the near future Eduard stated, “We’re looking to go to Barcelona Wine Week and introduce people to the new brand and our sparkling and still wines. We also are working to finish up the work rebuilding the masia where we’re based using sustainable practices and energy sources.”
As shown by this new direction and the proven quality of the wines, this is a sparkling producer in the Penedès region to keep an eye on.
