For some time the Jovani siblings of Montsa, Robert, and Sergi have been making wines in the form of the Berdié Cavas and the still wines of Origami. The latter of which are from vineyards in DOQ Priorat, DO Montsant, and DO Penedès.
Given that they’re a new, young cellar, they strive to make their wines as approachable to a younger market as possible and as such, they wanted a space in Barcelona to showcase their wines as well as allow people to taste/buy others and have a base for their offices. Thus was born, Jovani & Vins on Carrer Comte Borrell, 30 in the neighborhood of Sant Antoni. This new “Despatx de vins” just opened last week after several months of hard work to bang what was an old bodega in to modern shape.
The smell of fresh paint still lingered when I attended the presentation but they took everyone around to the various parts which include a wine shop up front (organized by price), two tasting spaces just behind it, a fresh cheese section, and then another space up top along with their offices. A wine bar this is officially not as in Spain, you are allowed to have a “tasting space” in wine shops for people to try wines before they buy. Most shops use this in the form of events but the Jovani siblings have established some proper places where you can drop in to taste a regular selection of wines, or attend their future tasting events.
With the handsome cheese selection by Xerigots, it forms a very nice addition to the budding wine landscape that has been shaping up in Barcelona over the last couple of years.
