There’s been a great deal of effort over the past decades to build up wine as a “fancy” thing that requires sitting down to drink and enjoy properly, whether that means with a meal (preferably of the Michelin-ed set) or optionally in a wood-panelled wine bar.
While it’s done a great deal to raise prices and elevate wine into the realm of something classy, it’s to the detriment of realizing the fact that wine can indeed be an everyday drink of choice. It may come as a shock, but you can indeed drink wine whenever and wherever you like. But, when not in that fancy wine bar with glassware for every variety, region, and food pairing, how does one contend with this?
I’ve been to plenty of fairs or events where it’s often the case there are plastic “glasses” being used for wine. These are truly terrible as not only is there this chintzy sense to them, but they’re usually thrown away after the events as they can’t really be washed all that well and they’re a type of plastic that’s hard if not impossible to recycle.
For smaller things like a picnic it may seem like you could get away with actual glass stemware, but I’ve seen plenty of breakage in these settings as well as the slightest breeze or over enthusiastic attendee will easily knock over and shatter anything with a stem.
This is why it was nice to receive a sample of the “VinVoyage” from Copain de Vin. It’s a stemless glass with a very fancy, refined shell case to it that, while not making it indestructible, makes it exceedingly portable. Headed off to a picnic? Toss a couple in the basket? Feel like taking a bottle to the Canal Saint Martin? Bring these with you to sit out with all the other Parisian hipsters.
The founders of Copain de Vin fired up a Kickstarter for this project which was very successful and you can still make a Late Pledge for the VinVoyage glasses if you wanted to get them.
Having held it in my hands and checked it out, it is indeed very nice and there are no weird attempts at being clever. It’s a nice glass in a sturdy, classy case that will most definitely be more resilient than any Riedel, Zalto, or pretty much any other standard wine glass.
I would also add that if you have a wine person on your list for anything Christmas related, this would make a very swanky item to receive!
