It reads more like some April Fool’s joke, but apparently Australian winemakers are putting sunscreen on their vines these days. Yes, seriously because if the BBC says it, then it must be true.
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere it’s hard to realize that it’s not the middle of summer down under and it’s shaping up to be yet another record breaker in terms of heat. As the temperatures exceed 45C these days, they’ve started to apply some form of vine sunblock to protect against the harsh heat. It’s not really mentioned if they do some kind of wash just before harvest or they pick the grapes as they are, slightly tinged by SPF 50. Probably still more appealing than what you find in most pesticides.
Like high altitude planting it’s just one more attempt to try and counteract what Mother Nature is throwing at us as we keep doing all we can to seemingly not stop the massive climate changes we’re seeing.
